Home childcare for SEND children

We provide home childcare for SEND children and young adults in London. These services enhance the support, development and wellbeing in households with SEN and disabilities. They range from respite care to everyday support at home or with going out to activities.

Child care helps children to gain independence while staying safe at home. This is beneficial for the child and the family who can be assured that the child is well cared for while taking a break from caring.

What is SEND?

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) includes behavioural, emotional and social conditions like autism, dyslexia or ADHD, and physical disabilities like cerebral palsy, visual impairment or hearing impairment.

Under the Equality Act of 2010 a disability is defined as a long term or progressive condition that is substantial and impacts on daily life. Approximately 11% of children in the UK are disabled.

There has been a significant increase in the number of children identified as SEND – over 5 times as many pupils were identified with SEND in 2019 vs 2008 (fft Education Datalab).

Around 1.7m pupils in England have SEN and the most common education, health and care plan (EHC) is for those on the autism spectrum and those who need help with communication (Gov.UK).

As SEND diagnosis increases there is a need for more childcare cover. Our professional home care services support both the family and the individual child to thrive at home.

The unique needs of SEND children

Parents of children and young adults with SEND can experience a range of difficulties with communication or behavioural challenges. They’ll need to make practical adaptations for a child with blindness or deafness. This adds pressure to busy London families who are working and building careers alongside raising their families.

Autistic individuals can have difficulty in social situations and communicating, making eye contact or conversation. They may also display behaviours like stimming (repetitive movements like hand flapping or rocking) which can be misunderstood. Our carers are trained to be autism friendly and we have registered with the National Autistic Society

Physical challenges like hearing or sight disabilities and neurological disorders like cerebral palsy can make it difficult for a child to access activities, cross roads safely, walk to school or class, manage stairs, and more. Jothno Care & Support works with families to ensure that the child or young adult can access activities, accompanying them and walking alongside and supporting them.

Every support plan that we put in place is unique and tailored to meet the needs of the child and their family. Each child needs different support and a full understanding of their situation and preferences. The plan will support any developmental goals that have been set by teachers and health professionals.

At Jothno Care, we work with families to ensure that everyone is satisfied with the plan we put into action and the expected outcomes.

Childcare for SEND children

We provide a range of different services for SEND children from supporting them at home to supporting their family.

We offer respite care for parents and families. These breaks reduce caregiver fatigue and stress and provide a better family balance. Taking time away from a SEND child means that a parent can spend time relaxing, going on a social outing without worrying about what’s happening at home, or spend time exclusively with another child/family member.

At home our carers encourage enriching activities that are designed to stimulate cognitive, emotional, sensory and physical growth – whatever the condition allows. These activities promote growth and independence in the child, giving them a sense of achievement. Activity is an essential part of living a healthy life for everyone.

Another of our services is accompanying and supporting SEND children and young adults at external activities. This can be a therapy session, accessing education or attending social events like sports, crafts, or daycare sessions. We can also arrange transport to activities. Going out is important for the child, allowing them to socialise, make friends, and learn new skills.

Our childcare for SEND children at home supports the development of life skills and independence under safe and compassionate guidance.

Benefits of home-based childcare for SEND

There are many benefits of home-based childcare for SEND. Primarily, it allows a child to remain at home in a familiar, comfortable environment while receiving professional care. This can be preferable to going into a formal residential supported living environment, particularly for a child with autism who is vulnerable and dislikes changes in routine.

Home childcare supports education, socialisation and access to the broader community for children who need help to do so. It promotes inclusion, self-esteem and autonomy, with measurable quality-of-life benefits for the families and the individual child.

Jothno Care and Support has been a beacon of hope for our family. Their ability to tailor care to my sister’s evolving needs has been remarkable. Each carer brings a mix of warmth, professionalism, and adaptability, ensuring that she always receives the best possible support. The difference in her wellbeing and our family’s stress levels has been night and day. We’re so grateful to have found a care agency that truly cares about its clients’ wellbeing. – Tanya, Islington
