The cost of supported living in London 2026

The cost of supported living in London varies widely depending on the person’s needs, the agency, staffing levels, and whether support is privately funded or commissioned. London supported living costs are higher than the UK average because of higher labour and operating costs.

Jothno Care and Support offers support from £22 per hour. We provide multicultural care across London from our office in East London including nearby boroughs. We also have a residential care unit in Slough.

What supported living means

Supported living is different from residential care. With supported living people generally have their own tenancy or occupancy agreement with the landlord. They or their family might also own the house or flat they live in. They might still live with family in an extended living arrangement.

With residential care support, the care company typically owns or leases the building and the person takes occupancy of a room, flat or home, paying a service charge. Jothno Care and Support offers both options. Supported living services can take the form of visiting care – for a few hours a day or week – or full time 24/7 live in care when required.

What affects the cost of care

The level of care that is needed for the person can affect the cost of supported living in London. The services can include companionship and accompanying the person to daily activities or college, personal care and mobility assistance, medication support and overnight cover, and handling complex needs.

Factors that increase the cost of supported living in London:

  • Living in London where costs are higher
  • Overnight care and waking night care
  • 24/7 monitoring and full time care
  • Specialist complex needs e.g. autism or multiple disabilities

Supported living costs increase with additional staffing requirements, whether that is extra time or one-to-one support. Overnight care and waking night care can add to the cost. In London, where wages and travel costs are higher, it can also impact on the cost of care. Specialist care and culturally matched care can also affect the price.

The cost of supported living in London

Supported living services do not have one fee, a single fixed price, they are usually quoted on the number of care hours, location and care package complexity. For example, the cost of supported living in London reported by the London Borough of Sutton can range from £688 to £1528 per week. Highly complex care for learning or physical disabilities can push this cost up.

The NHS quotes a range of £15-£30 per hour for visiting care for the UK as a whole. As mentioned, supported living fees vary across regions of the UK. London usually costs more than other parts of the UK, but it does also depend on support intensity and provider.

Jothno Care’s fees of £22 an hour sit in the middle of that range. Our services are specifically tailored to meet the cultural needs of our clients in a diverse London area. We match carers to the person they care for, making sure they are a good fit, speaking the same language, and are aware of any cultural requirements for diet, religion, gender, etc.

Funding and affordability

Adult social care is means-tested in many cases and may be partly or fully funded by a local authority or borough council. It does depend on financial assessment. At the time of writing, total capital and savings must be under £23,250. If you are over this limit you will need to be self funding. Note: you do not need to sell your home to access supported living services. If you would like free advice on funding and a care assessment, contact our care team on 020 4548 9300.

Why multicultural care matters

As a South Asian family business, we know that getting the right carer or care team in place matters. We have carers who speak English, Arabic, Gujurati, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi. We can source carers who speak other Asian languages.

By having a carer who speaks the same language, knows about food preferences, religious requirements (e.g. Muslim, Hindu, Sikh), cultural routines and holidays, and how family dynamics work, we can provide comfort and consistency to our service users.

This leads to improved supported living outcomes: better engagement, greater trust, and day-to-day stability. We encourage families to be part of the process. Supported living services supplement family care.

In our area in East London and surrounding boroughs (Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, and Havering), there is a widely diverse population including White, Asian (including Bangladeshi and Indian communities) and Black people (Plumplot). We do our best to match supported living carers to the person they care for, to serve these communities.

Supported living costs in London

The cost of supported living in London is based on the need of the person who requires care. They vary by region across the UK and are higher in London where staffing costs, transport, and operational costs are higher.

There is no single fee for supported living. Each care package is tailored to meet the individual need and most supported living is quoted. That said, the typical hourly rate ranges from £15-£30 and Jothno Care and Support charges £22 per hour.

Factors that affect the cost of supported living in London include the amount of time that care is needed, whether overnight care or live-in care is required, and whether there are specialist physical or learning disabilities.
